Big Creek Vineyard is the northernmost on the eight wineries, on the southern face of the Pocono escarpment. Though only 30 or so miles above the Lehigh Valley as the crow flies, our environs differ markedly in both local climate and geology.
A shorter growing season and extremely stony soils led us on a 20 year sojourn to learn what variety of grape would mature consistently and still produce a desirable wine.
Our vineyard has gone through as many changes through the seasons. Pulling out ill-chosen vines and replanting with more suitable ones was our rite of passage for a long, long time.
At present we have a baker's dozen of varieties from all over the globe. A few of the names seem like old friends, while most need some explanation as to the where and why. But, all is revealed in the taste. Wine should make you smile and think about where it came from. We are, after many years, getting to know each other: the land, the vines, the wine, and you!
